At ViroPharma, Dr. Pevear’s team continued to support the advancement of Pleconaril into Phase III clinical testing where it demonstrated clinical superiority to placebo; the first agent of its kind to do so. In 2000, Dr. Pevear was promoted to Director of Biology where he and colleagues discovered the anti-orthopoxvirus inhibitor VP-246/ST-246; later renamed Tecovirimat. Licensed to Siga, Tecovirimat was advanced to NDA approval under the animal efficacy rule and currently sits as the only true antiviral in the U.S. Strategic National Stockpile. After brief stints at Progenics Pharmaceuticals and Novartis, Dr. Pevear joined Protez Pharmaceuticals (later acquired by Novartis) where he led the team of antibacterial scientists engaged in the discovery and advancement of novel cyclic boronate beta-lactamase inhibitors (BLIs). In 2010, Dr. Pevear joined Drs. Luigi Xerri and Chris Burns in founding of Venatorx Pharmaceuticals. There, he led the biology team in the discovery of the novel, parenteral beta-lactamase inhibitor Taniborbactam that was the first BLI with inhibitory activity extending to metallo-beta-lactamases. The combination with cefepime demonstrated statistical superiority over the active comparator meropenem in Phase III testing. His team also discovered Ledaborbactam-etzadroxil; a broad-spectrum oral beta-lactamase inhibitor that was advanced into Phase 1 clinical testing in combination with Ceftibuten. Upon the demise of Venatorx, “CTB-LEDA” was licensed to Basilea Pharmaceuticals. Prior to industry, Dr. Pevear earned a B.Sc. in Microbiology from the University of New Hampshire, and a Masters and PhD in viral immunology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. Following his graduate work, Dr. Pevear completed post-Doctoral training as a Fellow of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society at Northwestern Medical School in Chicago, Illinois in the laboratory of Dr. Howard Lipton.
